Back in November I notice that the barrel on my No1 MkIII looked a little off. I took it down to the gunsmith to get it checked out and apparently the barrel got bent sometime during it's service. The gunsmith worked his magic and 65 dollars later I had a straighten barrel.
Hopefully I will get some range time soon
Not many 'smiths will straighten a barrel anymore.:thup:
But I have several No.1 barrels that are bowed, some still with the forestock attached but in poor shape. Just how they got that way would probably be a sad tale- of poor driving like as not...
Thankfully the rifle could be saved. Just have to shoot it to see how straight it is
Considering that the wood is broke at the bend and there is some gouges in the wood I would say mis use of a fine weapon.
Many an old military rifle have “off” barrels from being used as a step to get up and over an obstacle or as a seat to carry a wounded buddy to the rear. A good eye and some Oak blocks will normally get them back close enough for government work. Glad your Smith saved it.
I know of a gun shop in my old home town of Chatham, Ontario that has a barrel straightener that came from the Steyr factory in Austria. It's an impressive piece of tooling. Any Canadian owners of bent barrels can send them and he can iron them out perfectly. The shop is called Wortner's Gun Works.
