My first Garand is a 1.4 SA that has been rebuilt by RRAD. It's a beautiful rifle if you like the re-parked ones and the furniture (with RRAD stamped butt stock) is awesome. My question is what year or years or decade did this rifle get its face lift. I have had it 20+ years and the owner before had it at least 5-10 years and his dad got it who knows how many years before that. My thought is 1960's or 1970's maybe? I await the knowledge? Thanks
Red River Arsenal (RRA) changed its name to Red River Army Depot in the early 1960s, maybe around 1961. The Arsenals starting marking the receiver legs rather than marking the buttstock of rebuilt Garands around 1963-64. So your rifle, or at least the stock, likely went thru a rebuild in this short time frame of 1961-63/64 before they started placing rebuild marks on receiver legs. HTH.
The Summer 2012 GCA Journal will have an article on a flat new RRAD rebuild, a sweet rifle in perfect rebuilt condition as it left the arsenal.

Red River Arsenal became Red River Army Depot in 1962. That was not the only facility, almost all of them changed in that year due to the Army changing the responsibilities of the facilities and the basic way the Army existed. That year the Army re-designed itself.
Letterkenny Ordnance Depot was changed to Letterkenny Army Depot in 1962.
