Pictures of three Naval marked rifles
Attached are photographs of three British rifles I have with the N mark indicating Naval issue.
The Charger Loading Lee Enfield has the N mark on the left side of the socket and cannot be confused with an "N" serial number prefix or suffix. The Top Tang of the brass butt plate is marked "RM" indicating issue to the Royal Marines.
The No.1 MkIII Enfield 1914 rifle is a line thrower with the N marking on the left side of the socket.
The No.4 Mk1 is a B (Shirley) 1942 Line Thrower. The N is distanced from the prefix serial number.
No.1 and earlier rifles will be encountered with P/L/N (from poor memory) markings on the chamber area located under the handguard. It is generally believed that the markings indicate maintence/rework done in Plymouth Naval Base.
