Early M1891 Scout Scope Mount Issue

I would like to mount a scout scope on my Remington Mosin-Nagant. However, every scout mount I have encountered is too wide for the Remington sight base. I have included three views on my sight base, and two photos of later sight bases. Not the space between the sight ladder mounting ears on the Remington sight base as compared to the later sight bases.

Also, it appears that the Remington sight base is soldered to the barrel so it cannot readily be removed. And, I do not want to alter the rifle as it is collectable.

I would appreciate any information on a scout mount that is available for this rifle.

I don't think that can be removed without serious work. If you do get another Mosin, though, the following is quite helpful.

The tac rail for the rear sight is junk. It will never stay zeroed and you'll have to sight it every time you go to the range. I found this out the hard way and don't intend to go back.

Instead you can just remove the rear sight. Remove the upper hand guard off the barrel by sliding the rings towards the front of the barrel. Then punch out the two locking pins and slide the sight forward and it'll fall off. What you have left is a 3/8'ths rail that is perfect for .22 LR high mount scope rings. If you dig around on Ebay, you can usually find them for $12-$20. UTG and various other makers manufacture some good ones.

The only limiting factor to this is that you'll have some difficulty mounting anything bigger then a 40x scope even with hi-rise rings. What you'll want is a 2-7x32 through 2-7x40 pistol scope with a long eye relief. NCStar and AIM make some decent 2-7x32's for cheap.

The Remington Mosin Nagants do not have a pinned rear sight base. I'm guessing that they are soldered. Permanently altering the rifle is not an option for me.

Not to try and dissuade you from looking for a scope, but there doesn't seem to be mount available for that setup. Most people just recommend finding a cheap M91/30 to sporterize and keep the Remmy as a show piece or occasional shooter. Unless you can find some sort of rings that clamp around the front barrel, I'm out of ideas.

I'd also recommend getting another rifle. They are cheap and abundant right now. What you have is uncommon and collectible as you've noted. Trying to find a mount for an uncommon setup such as that will probably cost you more in the long run than just getting a rifle that the common mounts fit on.

Chopped and ground the scope mount I bought (fine blade hacksaw and Dremel tool). Tried it at the range this morning. Mixed results. I had a spacer under the rear that shifted over time. Need to secure it. Otherwise it seems promising.
