Exporting rifles from Canada into the USA

I know Questar used to handle exports of rifles into the USA, but they've stopped offerng that service unfortunatly.

Does anyone here know where the forms can be obtained, and roughly what it takes to complete the Canadian end of the process?

I'd chime in if I knew... usually, I'm more concerned with importing, not exporting.

I seem to recall though that the hardest think about Canada is just getting the gun unregistered. I think the larger hurdles are the paper requirements in the USA.

Check with Brian Dick of BDL Ltd. I know Brian exports worldwide, but I don;t know if he does importing....

Thanks guys, it' actually Brian I'm trying to deal with, but so far I'm having a difficulties figuring out the Canadian end.

Why not just call DFAIT export controls division and ask them? I have done the online form for import certificates, piece of cake and certainly not worth paying a dealer $25 or more to do.

You could also call Denise at Leroy's big valley gunworks in Montana. They do a lot of exporting to Canada, and used to be involved with a lot of importing. Their prices are right on too.

I was just looking at questar and they've raised their prices per import more than $70 since last year, and it was already up $25 from the year before that, so I'd really like to avoid dealing with them again if possible.

To avoid the higher price (for imports at least), then Leroy's is who you want. Just don't expect it as quickly. You will have to do your import cert online, and when DFAIT mails you the approved copy, you have to forward it to Denise at Leroy's so they can get the export permit. 6 to 8 weeks later, they will have it couriered to you, although if you live out West, there are alternate methods of getting it across the border.

My take on the importing is that I would rather save the cash than have it quickly. I am patient (and cheap when it comes to overhead).

The big problem with exports to the USA from Canada is that you must use truck or air freight which is very expensive. I think Leroy's has had problems on the Canadian side since loosing the service of Lucky Dollar Gun Exchange in SK. They still do a truckload from time to time from their new Canadian exporter but it takes many months to build a load big enough to warrant the expense and the Canadian exporter has another job which keeps his export business on low priority. I'm not sure who you are or what you wish to export to the USA. I don't recall any recent inquiries here. Most of my Canadian business has been sales/export lately not imports with the USD at close to par. There is one Gentleman in Detroit wanting to get one family heirloom Lee Enfield imported if that's you. Another aspect is that if you're looking to do it "on the cheap", I'm probably not the guy you want anyhow. My fee for import to the USA is cut and dried for one or four firearms at a time and additional firearms are extra. The folks I use to do my exports from Canada are Fraser Direct Logistics, Ltd. in Georgetown. They are squared away and can get the job done on a timely basis.
