Just got my first Japanese rifle, Type 99 Ariska, with chrysanthemum, bolt dust shield, perfect chrome lined barrel, mismatched bolt, monpod, stock furniture is excellent, intact aircraft/ladder type rear sight, and plastic/rubber type sling with unit symbols painted on it. The sling has organge/red goo coming out of it. My question would be, is this deterioration, or someone trying to repair the aging sling? Will post a pic when I get home from work tonight. Thanks.

Probably the old rubber as it breaks down.

I found an old rubber glove in the car warehouse yesterday that's breaking down in a similar fashion. Which reminded me of this thread.

I have had several leather slings produce this type of sushi juice to include an original sling on a swedish mauser and an 03' springfield. I wiped them down with a dry towel and rubbed in vaseline just like I use to do with my baseball glove. They turned out very well.
