Model 1891 Argentine query

[Preemptive apology if this has been covered, but I did not see it in my initial searches on this forum.]

I've had this rifle for around six years now, and am finally getting around to sorting it out. The serials all match, I have a 1909 bayonet and an unknown sling. I need help identifying the sling (I have 5 or 6 of them, all the same), and need to get a straight answer on ammunition to use.

Marking on the bayonet is "WYERSBERG KIRSC___UM & CO. SOLINGEN." Their is no marking on the green leather frog.

I have 100 rounds of Prvi Partizan 180gr... I have read conflicting posts regarding use of new production ammunition and the strength of this receiver. Can anyone confirm that I must use surplus or handloads?

As far as the sling, the only markings I have found are three small crowns in a triangular pattern. If this is the correct or an acceptable sling, does the button go to the front or rear of the rifle?

I would like to trade this 1909 bayonet for the proper model, but I can live with it. I'd also probably sell this ammo, or pull it and reload, if not suitable in this rifle.

The name of the bayonet maker is Weyersberg Kischbaum & Co. Solingen, the usual supplier for Argentine bayonets of that vintage.

I really do not think there wil be any problem with chamber pressure, for the reasons that follow:

If you take a look at Olson "Mauser Bolt Rifles", 3rd Edition, P55, you will find a section view of the M91 Argentine chamber. It has a very long transition. And the bore on such old rifles is typically well-worn to definitely loose! So there should be no problem in using the Prvis, except that they have boattail bullets which yaw when they emerge from the case neck into the transition cone, losing a lot of gas pressure as the gas goes round the bullet before it is finally engraved by the lands - with a slight skew as a a result of the yawing. Accuracy can be dire.

To check this: simply take a 7.65mm boattail, drop it into the chamber, and see how far it goes before it stops. You will be amazed - in my Argy it is about a centimeter beyond the case mouth!

I tried every bullet I could find, and the ONLY bullet that produces acceptable grouping in my Argentine M91 Engineers Carbine is the 0.312" 180 gn Hornady with a flat base, round nose, and a long cylindrical section. This long cylindrical section is vital to reduce the free-flight distance (and loss of pressure from gas blow-by) and feed the bullet into the transition cone.

So that is the reason why you will need reloads to get good results with the M1891 chamber.

I have found that the sling is a Swedish model. I have listed them in the for sale section. I found a repro green 1909 Argentine sling that will match the frog that I will most likely order, unless I replace the bayonet and/or frog.

I have a repo green sling for 1909 and a 1891 bayo with crest intact, but without a scabbard, if interested. Bob chickenman45@q.com
