well, a friend has a pretty clean looking yugo sks i'm looking to buy from them, and they are asking 270$ for it. anything i should look for in the area of flaws/quality marks?
also, i would love to throw a scope on it by possibly replacing the receiver cover with a tri-rail or something. also read that i may have problems with casing hitting the scope on ejection. any advice on what scope/rails to get?

Yugo SKS's are famous for having badly rusted or pitted gas systems. I would disassemble and inspect the gas system before I purchased it. It is simple to do and requires no tools. I have had a Yugo SKS in the past and they are nice guns.

just did, looked clean. the little thing at the end that held the button to switch from semi to grenade wasnt completely smooth on the inside, but otherwise looks good. can i cheaply replaces these parts in the future if need-be?
That part is usually reffered to as the "gas shut off" or "gas plug" and yes it is for swiching the gas system off when launching grenades. The can be replaced but they can be slightly expensive for what they are. I dont know of anyone that has original Yugo gas plugs right now. Most are new made replacement parts and thats probably explains the expense. If it is rough on the outside you could try to polish it slightly with very fine sand paper or steel wool. You will need to be very careful when doing this as tight tolances are required for proper operation of the rifle. Also be aware of the fact that Yugo M59/66's have a free floating firing pin (it has no spring) and slam fires can happen every now and then. Just point the rifle in a safe direction, as you always should do, when loading and you will have nothing to fear. Good luck and have fun shooting it.Quote:
