1899 Remington Lee in Michigan
Following the Spanish American War, the State of Michigan was one of several states to purchase Model 1899 Remington Lee Rifles. I am attaching three photos. The first photo shows members of the 32nd Michigan Vol. Infantry (2nd Regiment, Mich. National Guard, Grand Rapids, Mich.) circa 1900. The men are wearing blue Mills Belts with some pockets for spare Lee Magazines. The Remington-Lee bayonets are visible on the Sergeant and Corporal on the right. The second photo is circa 1901-02 taken at Manistee, Michigan. It is believed to be Company E., 3rd Regiment, Michigan National Guard (from Calumet), probably at an Annual August Encampment. My Mother's Uncle, Bernard Grimmeke, was in this Unit and preserved the photo. The men in the rank & file have Remington Lee Rifles and dark Mills Belts. The NCOs have khaki Mills Belts, Krag bayonets, and some are holding Krags. (By 1903-05 the Krag seems to have replaced the Remington Lee in the Mich. Nat. Guard). Third photo, circa 1903, 3rd Regt. MNG at "Swedetown" (near Calumet, Mich.).
