M1917 Saved for a Future Rebuild

Looking for a barrel for a project and found this, M1917 converted to a target rifle, as it still had its ears thought I,d give it a home, have a use for the stock and the barrel and will keep the action until bits pop up etc, the other thing was the John wilkes sight that came with it.

(forgot to mention has anyone got a backing plate for the sight, there are two, one to fit the M1917/P14 and another to fit the Enfield No4)

That's neat! I love unmodified rifles but I still think that the professionally done, modified rifles are cool too. This gun could still be a ton of fun at a military match in the unlimited, non-optics catagory. I almost bought one about a week ago listed in the paper for $200 but the ears had been milled off and the front sight was a commercial one too. Figured the barrel had been cut so too much restoration work to put back together.

How is this rear sight being held in place?

once on the correct backing plate it would fit similar to the PH sight on the P14 shown

Never seen that set-up before. How well does it hold up in a match.

Dont know what its like in a match, but have shot a P14 with the PH sight shown with no probs, this was common in target conversions here, the John wilkes sight is the first I,ve come across and well built but dont have the backing plates but quite easy to make, so will be some time before I use it.

I found a M1917 Eddystone in similar condition about 18 months ago. October 1918 receiver and barrel in a nice Boyd's sporter stock. The receiver and barrel were still GI, not sporterized. The barrel is in good shape, some wear, but clean. My son and I had a great time restocking the action and barrel back into a military stock. We wound up using a Boyds military stock as it was impossible to find military stock for less than the price of the Eddystone at that time. Now it seems there are more military stocks around. Have fun.

Not sure at this point. I was starting to look for a sporterized M1917 action and barrel, but haven't had the time to go to many gunshows lately. The on line auction sites seem way to high.
