My First Non-US rifle....No4 Mk1/3

OK,...my first Commonwealth rifle.

I've agreed to purchase this rifle. It has the No 2 trigger mod? I'll research more unless there is a sticky I missed about the process.

This rifle was purchased by the original owner wrapped and was solidly plugged with cosmoline from overhaul. From a historical perspective, I know it will be a mix of parts...I guess I was looking for a nice rifle. It has a new 5 Groove barrel. No importation mark into the United States.

If you see anything else interesting please let this rookie/newbie know!!! I don't know the pitfalls of Enfield ownership yet. Do they breed like other rifles? :)

Nice Long Branch (Canada) produced rifle, and you are correct that it has been converted to the Mark 2 trigger. Yes, they do breed prolifically, or rather Enfields are an addiction satisfied only by procuring more Enfields.

Since this is an over-haul, what determining factors tell you that it is a Longbranch? Sorry for the ignorance?

What do nice condition FTR typically go for?

The "L" in the serial number is a big giveaway. Also, being that it's a No.4 Mk.1/3 indicates that it was a Mk.I* to start, which would limit the choices toeither Long Branch or Savage.

But the "England" on the LH side of the buttsocket might qualify. Just pre-1968 import. (Some call the "England" an export mark, but that view is less in favor.)

I can see that now, but I would find that less obtrusive than the receiver based etching they do today.

Yah, many post '68 marking don't bother me in the least (Blue Sky "smashings" are a big exception) , but the current regulations make for some pretty unsightly markings.

1. "Mark" 2 trigger mod. (A No.2 is a different rifle.)
2. At some point after 1954, after it was FTR'd it was Proof fired at the Birmingham Proof house. (Crowned BNP.)
3. As has been said: the country of origin (England) was a requirement of the US rather than a UK Export Mark.

Nice rifle and not too common either. A legit conversion of a Long Branch No.4Mk.1* to Mk.2. Enjoy it.

Just one observation. I don't ever recall us barring out the original number so as to make it illegible during any FTR or Base workshop overhaul. In fact, deleting a number was taboo. It was always barred through. There were exceptions where we would/could mill out the old but that was usually on No2 and L9 pistol slides/barrels where the an old one was being re-used on another pistol. But not the master number on the body - ever!

I wonder what the master number on the butt socket reads under the line of crosses
