what type of wood is this?

What kind of wood is my stock? I'm no good with this sort of thing so I figured I'd ask outright.

Most probably a walnut, I would say black walnut.
It is a lighter shade than usual but even with the unclear photo I don't think it's Birch.
Birch has more a yellow than the shade in your stock.

Rusty, there is white and yellow Birch. I have seen Birch look just like walnut and walnut look just like Birch if it is sap wood. In all the years of working on stocks there have been a few times were I had to sand and smell the wood to be sure as they were that close. The smooth Dense look is why I am calling it Birch as by the Hand guard with nice large grain you can see it isn't Birch.

We do need a clearer picture for sure. Rick B

Go with the experts, birch and walnut wood on this Garand. Nice looking birch even though it is not my favorite wood on this rifle.

Some info on Walnut: I have had over 4,000 03A1 handguards, WWII production. When you open a box of 10 or 4, often you will find a small percentage of very dark Walnut. You will often find a small percentage of light Walnut, like yellow. Some of the handguards will be brown with 20% or more of it's color changing to yellow.

I remember being shocked one day when I opened an original contract of 4 handguards and every one of them was very light yellow.

Walnut has many, many, different shades, depending upon what part of the tree it comes from. When we were fighting WWII, production color was never an issue.

That is one reason why when a guy asks me to send him a wood item that matches his color, I refused to make the attempt.
