"Jumpin' Jim" subscribed to the command philosophy that the Airborne General should be first out the door and last in the chow line and should look like the troopers around him. He carried a Garand. At birth he was orphaned and adopted by alcoholics. He joined the Army at 17 years old and, on the recommendation of his sergeant, was given an appointment to West Point.
Gavin fractured two vertebrae landing on pavement on the Market Garden jump and fought the rest of the war on an injured back.
