First model Ross .303

Thanks to Badger's sound advise I was able to ascertain that the bolt on my Ross was assembled correctly. It fired w/o mishap. The rear sight takes some getting used to as it's more complicated than most military rifles I've fired.

A bigger issue is that once the magazine is loaded, only the 1st round feeds into the chamber. The remaining rounds had to be pried out and fired singley. In nosing around into the magazine interior, I see that there are 2 parallel sheet metal protrusions, one on each outboard side of the magazine interior, both parallel to the axis of the bolt, near the upper surface of the magazine. They extend, maybe 1/2 way from the rear of the magazine toward the barrel. They effectively prevent cartridges in the magazine from rising high enough to be intercepted by the closing bolt. What's their function and how might I get the rifle to cycle through 5 or 6 rounds from the magazine in spite of them?

Second, there is a "j" shaped part that extends vertically into the interior of the space enclosed by the trigger guard @ the forward side of the trigger guard, ahead of the trigger. What's it's function?

The magzine cut-off on your rifle is working as it is supposed to, in single shot position. Change the position of the "j" shaped piece inside the trigger guard - shift it up - and the rifle should become a repeater.
