The Savage cartouche S. Are the different styles in the S, year specific? Thanks Steve
square S is Savage main plant and the rounded s is stevens plant
its a partnership type deal. for a while savage / stevens were under the same roof but later 2 separate plants but still under partnership.

back when the savage no.4s came in by large numbers, there was a write up focuses on the savage stevens history involving the no.4 production but I haven't seen that write up in years. most likely gone forever from the site crashes and such. it was a damn good read and very detailed.
Savage also had a plant in Syracuse NY and two or three in Chicapee Falls. Clawson's new book on the Mosin Nagant should sort this all out.
Did Savage make a cartouche stamped scabbard, scabbard mouthpiece or frog? Thanks Steve
The scabbards aren't marked with the square or round "S". The mouthpieces are marked No.4Mk.1 and are made of steel instead of pot metal making them easy to distinguish. There were savage marked bayonet frogs as well as slings and breech covers.
