Good question Marty. I don't have the answer and can only offer a guess. If you read Scott Duffs book on the post war Garands you will see that SA made quite a number of small parts during fiscal year 1946 for the rebuild program. I would think that early on, with problems getting production underway and securing contracts for small parts and the fact the Korean war was heating up, SA would have used whatever parts were needed and available. I would think they were alright with new barrels, bolts, op rods and gas cylinders, but other parts, I can only guess. I am looking forward to an answer from someone with alot more knowledge than me on this subject.
I recently recieved a 4.2 SG SA from a CMP mail order. The windage knob and trigger group have been swapped out. However the rest of the rifle looks pretty untouched and I would say it is mostly original. The odd thing is the bolt is a -19 and I dont think that it would normally be considered correct. The barreled reciever and bolt are orginal finish and have very distinctive wear patters that show the two have been together for a very long time. Anything is possible, so I am not going to swap them out. I think this may have been one of the greek rifles that came back without stocks or trigger groups installed.
The use of WW2 SA production parts is probable and sensible in light of production start ups.I know for sure that (unstruck)finished receivers , Receiver blanks and steel stores that were from were WW2 production
were put into production and used thru all post war production til the end of production in 1956 with the 6 million numbered receivers.The "Z" prefixed heat lot of the SA 6 million numbers were from 1945 production.
