In picture #1 you can clearly see the guy reloading with his right hand bladed along the stock while he pushes the en bloc down with his thumb. I assume this is an actual combat photo so you can see the discipline for what some say is not necessary, apparently a combat soldier uses no shortcuts, at least this one. Carbine barrel also sneaking into the photo. Final thought, I wonder how many M1 Garand riflemen lost their shooting hand glove?
Seen, and I can tell you first hand, you don't lose your stuff. You develop a discipline to put it in the pocket so you have it. You just can't get more when you're out in the field.
The last photo shows the guy on the left who looks like PVT Fish in Saving Private Ryan.
