received the plated M 1917 Enfield
I received the plated M 1917 Enfield from the my FFL dealer today. I checked the rifle out tonight. It would appear it was used as a parade rifle rather than a ceremonial rifle unlike one used by the VFW. The rifle was well taken care of. Maybe one used by the Old Guard at Arlington? It will not close on a no-go gauge. The rifling are very pronounced and appear bright, not mirror shiny, but not dark. There appears to be some minor pitting however. But I would say over all in fair to good condition. I’m taking it out to my gunsmith and have it scoped.
There is not a lot of pitting on the gun, where the nickel has flaked off. However it is stained by surface rust. The internal parts are also plated and covered with something that appears like dried varnish, Some kind of dried oil I would think. All in all I think I just happened to find it at the right time.
I’m still not sure if the resale value would be higher if I strip the nickel off and have it refinished or just leave it plated. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
