My father "Big Bubba" did it all the time. I know of one checkering job he was real proud of, a RSG with both IP and S'G' cartouches on it. After he got through, there was no way to see any of that mess. He then put ten coats of BLO to make the stock shine. The owner was really greatful and paid him extra. Yes Sir'ree. After "Big Bubba" got through, you could see that stock shine a mile away.
Bubba's right, it a custom job. One of...

Original 3.34 S.G. with Trimble to SG subcontract highwood stock When I bought it, the only changes besides the checkering job were a dab of white paint on the tip of the front sight and a dab of red on the left side of the safety.
Back in the day when Bubba was a youngin that was an acceptable thing to do to just about any sulplus rifle. Of course today it's "How could you do such a thing". It does appear to have been nicely done. Of course you may be able to find a correct stock for it and return it to greatness once again.
But then again the barrel is a replacement as IBM made their own barrels and did not use any Underwood barrels.
Here's the checkering that came on my 5.4mil Inland. The second picture was after a lot of sanding, stain, and 3 coats of the "Dreaded BLO." :nono: - Bob
