Odd notch on Rem. receiver
Hi all,
I could use some of your collective expertise again.
My buddy has me looking at his Remington 1917. I'm considering buying it from him. There is an odd notch on top of the receiver next to the serial number stamping that I have not seen on any other rifles of this model. It looks like one half of a hole has been milled, but its not totally concentric. It flairs at the edges, so the diameter is more than double what the radius (measured perpendicularly) would measure. Make sense? Regardless of the shape of the hole, why is it there? Also, the stock is freakin' gorgeous, obviously not original, yet it has an eagle stamp in front of the trigger guard and an the alpha numeric "3N" behind the trigger guard. There is no arsenal rebuild cartouche anywhere on it. There is a very slight E stamped on the fore-end which should correspond to an original Eddystone stock. Could the stock be a replacement meant to look like an original? The rest of the parts (without dis assembly) are mostly Remington, govt. eagle inspection stamps abound in the normal places. Would love to own it, but don't want to pay collector pricing for a mix master. Thanks for any info and opinions that you wish to contribute!
