Help identifying unit marks

Hello all,

I am having trouble ID'ing unit marks on three of my rifles.

The first is a MLM Mk I*, downgraded to DP status. It has "Lattymer School" stamped on the butt stock. The disc is marked "1896 M". Below that is what looks like "L.C.G.A." stamped over "KR". I'm assuming the large "22" is a rack number, as the rifle retains its original 303 chamber.

The second is a CLLE Mk I*. Butt-plate tang is marked "9.14" over "7 LL" over 225. I assume 9.14 is september 1914, the 225 being a rack number. Have no idea of the 7 LL.

Last is a MLM carbine. "M & D" over a sale mark. Disc is marked "RCA 21" which translates to Royal Canadian Artillery (?). Plenty of sale marks, but no other Canadian Property marks.

I have looked up various lee-enfield web sites which decipher the various unit marks. Even looked up Lattymer School in the UK. The first 2 rifles have me stumped.

Any ideas/opinions?

Lattymer school definately IS an English public school that had/still has a Cadet Force

I would say the first started life as K.R.G.A ? As for RCA I think the Canadian Artillery units were named as Garrison Artillery , example PEIGA = Prince Edward Island Garrison Artillery.

You need to buy a little booklet available cheap from Brian at BDL Ltd that details all of the acknowledged and official markings used in the UK Military

The CLLE is marked to the 7th (1/7) Battalion The King's (Liverpool) Regiment. 1/7 is the obvious choice here, because 2/7 wasn't formed until October of 1914.

Forgive me Peter but Latymer Upper School is not a Public School; it is an Independent School, which is not quite the same thing thing. My cousin went to Latymer and I went to Chiswick Grammar School, just up/down the road from Latymer, which is in Hammersmith.

In my day we both had CCFs and rowing clubs and thus great rivals.

At Chiswick, we used CGS CCF as a shorthand, Latymer would have used LUS CCF and if IIRC did.

I will take the above advice and order an ID book from BDL. Didnt know there was such a resopurce available.

"C.G.A." is Canadian Garrison Artillery, as opposed to "R.C.A.", "Royal Canadian Artillery". "Garrison" meaning they manned fortifications such as the Halifax Citadel, Fort Rodd near Victoria, etc. The "R.G.A." did not entirely pull out of Canada until 1906 I believe. I thought I had a postcard of them marching down to the docks in Victoria, but can't find the photo at the moment.

Here's a photo that was on eBay of them and some Canadian troops building a bridge across Esquimalt Lagoon in 1905/6. Note the much-hated German style caps that only lasted a year or two before they were withdrawn.
