With thanks to Advisory Panel member Peter Laidler, an excellent new article has been added to the Technical Articles for Milsurp Collectors and Re-loaders (click here).

This is another in a continuing series of interesting articles by Peter. Using an example from the Small Arms School at Warminster, the article is accompanied by a detailed photo montage and provides an insiders look at the No.1 EY Rifles.

Peter has also sent us a somewhat related article with pictures from weapons held at the Small Arms School armoury at Warminster, showing the results of grenades exploding in the cups of Patt 14 EY rifles. Watch for it to be added to the Knowledge Library during the coming week.

So that is how it is done. I wonder if they used a similar process on the earlier Mk I*** EY's that used the thicker steel wire with brass screws to attach the ends?

I should have kept the one I sold that had that "EY" mark!

Does the "EY" mark come from the initials of the gentleman who first designed these Grenade Launchers?
I'd run across a page on these awhile back and the designers name (which escapes me at the moment) had the initials E. Y.

I've never heard of it standing for anyone's intials.

Formal War Department manuals indicate E.Y. means "May be used for ball ammo in emergency".

Here's a 1905 MKI EY/2 rifle in my collection. Originally issued to Australian Light Horse (ALH). Appears to have been wire-rapped forward of sight only and removed long ago. By coincidence, there's an identically marked ALH EY MKI at the Bay street armoury here in victoria thats just a few rack numbers apart, only it still has its wire.
