This is a recent acquisition through trade. It spent time underwater during hurricane Katrina in coastal Louisiana back in 2005 so it was quite rusty & had mold in the barrel channel.
Here is what it looks like after reassembly & cleaning. I replaced the No2 backsight with a No1 while I had it apart & recrowned the severely pitted muzzle.
Perhaps someone can tell me why the receiver is marked No1 MkV1 instead of No1 MkVI.
Hello OIS's. It's a No1 MkV1.This rifle is the relatively rare Lee Enfield Number 1 Mark V1 trials rifle. About 1025 of these rifles were made in the late 1920s between the No 1 Mk V and the No 4 Mk I. These rifles featured a receiver-mounted rear sight like the No 4, and a heavier barrel than other No 1 rifles. My knowledge of these rifles is somewhat limited. You should reconfigure the rifle back to the way you found it and do some research....it possibly is very valuable. Regards, Rick.
