Okay. I picked a forum at random to ask this question. Not trying to get anybody exercised or upset - just a genuine question from an individual who owns a variety of firearms, including an RRA LAR-15 NM A4. Please explain to me just what the need is for this magazine storage capacity. Is there some sort of competition that requires a hi-capacity magazine to get good scores? If there's not really a "need", is it some sort of desire? I really don't get it.
The 30 round magazine was introduced because the AK47 used a 30 rounder. When US forces first encountered the AK in Vietnam, the 20 round magazine was standard in both the M14 and then the M16. I like 20 rounders best. Especially off the bench where a 30 rounder is a bit cumbersome. As far as why folks own them: Because they can. Remember that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution was never about sport shooting and duck hunting as some would have us believe. The founders would want us to have comparable magazine capacity to what the enemies of freedom are using. They would have wanted firearms ownership for civilians to advance technologically too so the argument that the thinking is obsolete is moot IMHO. Why do you think most of the left and some on the right are Hell bent to ban all of these semi-automatic military lookalikes?

However, let me turn your question on its ear..... why do YOU feel the need to own ANY gun, and specifically your RRA LAR-15 NM A4?
Yes you do get more points shooting with high capacity magazines,because you don't have to reload as often. This is true with any firearm in the matches I've shot.When you stop to reload you loose time. I shoot a 1911 in .45 in pistol matches able to hold 7+1. If You can hold 10 rounds and it is a 20 round coarse you reload once to my twice. The more shots in a coarse the more time it saves.The fact that my .45 kicks harder and requires more recovery time (at least with me)than say a 9mm or .40 cal that can hold those 10 or more you get a much better time advantage. I also agree with the other posters that you want something comperable to the enemy in a fighting situation.
Why does anyone need a car that goes over 55 mph?

The whole idea of a Second Amendment came about from a much better understanding of Reality as well as respect for God and Man's laws regarding good governance. There is always a chance of Tyranny, and the Citizens then (and now) have the Right (and the Duty) to fight back against it. It might interest you to know that the original County/State militia companies of the Revolutionary time period were locally controlled and funded, and had full sized military CANNON in their Armories, and trained with them. And this was normal, even under the British King. And that was to fight off invaders - but it was always there, also, for the use of the citizenry, if the existing government forgot it's duty to the People - and it's place.
But the British back then understood the Magna Carta, and the Rights of Man - better than our Congress does today.
