I recently got a sportetized no. 4 which I am planning to restore to a battlefield piece. My biggest obstacle is that the metal has been chromed and the chrome is pitted and deteriorated. I don't want to re-chrome. Any suggestions as how to get the metal to its original finish.
Sell it and start over? Harsh, but you'll be way ahead cost and real value wise very quickly.
Ususally chromers will buff a piece to death. Plus there's apt to be corrosion under the deteriorated areas. Additionally, you still have to fine wood, barrel bands, sight protectors, etc. and that assumes that the barrel wasn't shortened.
