I have just purchased a deactivated 1942 Inglis Mk1M (2T1309) it is however fitted with a Mk2 butt and barrel. Would this combination ever be used in service? (I bought it to go with my Yeomanry marked Austin Champ)

In a word, YES. But further........, in service, as opposed to the dreamworld outside the military where some seem to inhabit another parallel universe, all parts were made to be and were regularly fully interchanged. They'd leave the Armourers shops in serviceable condition according to the current EMER spec. In the latter years in service and until recently in Cadet service, the Mk2's would come out of workshops as complete Mk3's - except for the body of course - and that includes shorter barrels, lightweight butts and butt slides etc etc

It almost certainly didn't leave the factory in 1942 with a Mk2 barrel and butt; but yes it could well have ended up with those parts whilst in service. Civilian collectors - such as myself - tend to prefer their guns to be as close to factory original as possible. But as Peter's reply illustrates, the people who use them in the real world have vastly better things to worry about. ;)

To be honest Peregrine, I think that FV is one of those transient passers-by that has come on, got the answer he wanted - or didn't want - and we won't see again. Just my thoughts
