NO4 MK1 restoration

Hi New to the forum, I have been looking at it for about a week now and it has been very helpful. So I thought I would join. One week ago I traded a 1898 US Krag that I had built to sell for a NO4 MK1* It was very dirty but I have always wanted the Lee Enfield rifle unforntely the bolt does not match S/N nor does the Magazine clip. The fore end was cut down and hand guards gone. But the bolt was smoth all the parts were present. I will send pictures soon. I have ordered the stock set to restore what I can of the wood.It ha a 5 grove barrel with good lands and shoots great. I just watched two videos someone posted very helpful they were 55 months old so didn't reply. any thing to help with the refirbishing let me know thanks Mike

I`ve been going through the same kind of resto that you apparantly are for a while now. I got a Long Brach (made in Canada if you didn`t know already) No4 MK1* that was sporterized sometime in the late 50`s or early 60`s from my uncle as a present over the summer. The barrel had been cut down and everything was mismatched so I figured I would try and turn it back to a military configuration. I ordered a whole new stock and a new barrel that had a bayonet lug at the end. A gunsmith friend of mine was able to headspace the new barrel and test fire it and he told me it shot just as good as when it had the cut barrel. I just got it back yesterday but I`ve been lazy with posting pictures on it. All in all parts aren`t too hard to come by. I went through Numrich to get all of the screws and bands that I couldn`t salvage from the original and found a stock on ebay for around $30 (plus shipping of course) but usually I`ve seen them as sets at around $100. It is a great gun to have if you want to just collect it or even if you want to hunt with it like me.

Thanks for the info. sorry you had to replace the barrel. let us know how it turns out. I got a stock set at View the Largest Selection of Firearms in Easton PA and a few other parts there. Also liberty tree has a lot of parts. Should get the stock and parts this week. Will post before and after pictures when I get done.

That`s ok. It didn`t really set me back that much. I`m glad that was the only major thing I needed to get done professionally. Now it`s just a matter of putting the stock on it, redialing in the scope that came with it when I was given it, and having fun shooting it again. I just love how I can still use a piece of WW2 history to have fun.

Welcome.
Don't forget Springfield Sporters and BDL (who advritises here) who are good sorces for Enfield bits as well. Check the archive for may great posts concerning stock fitting/finishing etc....

I did mean to say Long Branch when I posted this, my fault.
I`ll be posting pictures of what my rifle looks like before i put the stock on and after it is all assembled. It seems my contemporary also doing this resto will be doing the same. I have a feeling both of these rifles are just going to be beautiful pieces when done.
