MK4 MK1 New Stock

I got the new stock last friday and after fitting took a few hours but enjoyed every minute. Fore End Walnut not sure of the other, any help would be nice. I will put BLO on it this week. Thanks for looking .Mike

Nice work. The Upper handguard appears to be Beech. I had pretty good success darking up som Beech to match darker wood with XXX stain from Brownells.

Thanks I thought about staining also, I guess I should wait until I out a few coats of Linseed oil first on the fore end. Did your handguard have varnish on it and what of sand paper did you use. I was thinking 600 grit.

I restocked a bobbed Lithgow No 1 MIII* with a new (raw) Beech forend and had to match a Coachwood butstock and handguard. The XXX helped darken the lighter areas on the Beech.
Looking at your photos again the light areas on handguard are only on one side. Nicely figured buttstock. The rest seem to match quite well from what I can tell from the photos and you might have to darken the whole set and still never get a satisfactory match. I think I would leave it.
That stock fitting was enjoyable for me as well.
Was the old furniture cut down or just cracked?

The fore end was cut down and the butt stock was rounded at the wrist. do you think the linseed oil would darken it any the fore end and the butt stock are both raw would. I have never used linseed oil. except on the teak wood on my uncles boat in Alaska every summer before we started the salmon fishing. The Teak wood was so dark anyway it was hard to tell.

It may be just the photos but it looks as though it has some finish (BLO or stain). Watch the thread for a few days before you do anything. Many here more experienced than myself who will chime in with more ideas.

Lots of folks here suggested 50/50 raw linseed oil or boiled linseed oil and terpentine. I tried BLO/turpentine with good results. I love the smell.
