Unit markings

I have a Remington manufactured m1917 that was at one time Canadian issue.

The markings on the butt spell out 2 61 RCA

The pic of the front shows the typical red band that was painted on some U.S. pattern rifles used by Canadian forces. This particular rifle also has a white band painted just ahead of the red band and has 30-06 in black stencil lettering over the red paint.
The forward handguard has been replaced as there is no sign of paint ever having been applied.
I'm hoping that someone with a good knowledge of deciphering the various Canadian military units can shed some light on which unit(s) may have used this rifle.

Any help greatly appreciated.

jakester, I also have a canadian marked 1917. Mine has "55 RCA" with a 26 under it and the "C" with broadarrow stamp. Some time back someone on this or another forum told me that my markings stood for: the Royal Canadian Artillary, Unit 55. The 26 was probably a rack number.

Another fellow on another board thought it might be rifle number 2 of 61 RCA. The most difficult part is figuring out what the number sequence means. From the few I've seen with Canadian markings, none were marked in exactly the same manner.

It has more character than my nearly new Eddystone, and shoots under 2" with good ball ammo.

I believe the markings are for the 61st Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery, based in Edmonton, Alberta. It was in 1935 that the RCA were formed and I assume that your rifle was issued to them for the WW2 period.

My canadian '17 has 12TC and 794, both lined out plus the broad arrow in the capital C stamped into the right hand side of the stock. Anyone have an opinion on the meaning of 12TC? The rifle is Remington made, 66xxx, barrel stamped 12-17.

Interesting, I was just looking at an ex-PCMR rifle in our local museum, it has "12TC" as well, barred out. Must have been issued to them before PCMR got it.

New tio these rifles so please enlighten me as to what PCMR stands for. Saw it a reply to my post on a canadian for a correct grade sling & now here.

The PCMR had a lot of M-1917's during the war, and even though some were replaced by Winchester 94 carbines, many rangers carried the M-17 right to the end. After the war they had the option of purchasing their rifles for $5, which many did.
