Scrubbed Brazilian Mauser

Last fall I glommed a Brazilian Mauser at an on-line auction. It looked and sounded good...

Whenit arrived I discovered that it had been completely refinished and that the receiver crest and bolt had been scrubbed. It is in great shape, and all of the parts that still have numbers on them match the receiver and the bore is spectacularly good...but I can't figure out why the crest and bolt flat was scrubbed.

I've heard of Argentine Mausers being scrubbed, but not Brazilian. Anyone have any ideas?

Doesn't look right to me. I haven't seen a scrubbed Brazilian before. Not disclosed in auction? I guess that hurts value.

Definitely not what I bargained for...still a decent deal, though.

Only thing I could thing of is that it was rusted so bad on the exterior they just kept polishing until it was gone. They aren't that prominent on some anyway as they were worn during service.

It's possible, but the receiver is in very good condition and it is hard to believe that rust could have been bad enough to result in the crest being polished off without affecting the rest of the receiver ring.

Does the bolt have a # and does it match the reciever? If not it could be a restoration job where scope base holes were filled and the reciever was ground/polished to blend in the repair. This would be easy to determine by viewing the underside of the bridge and ring with a small dental mirror.

Unlike many Mausers, the serial number on Brazilian Mauser bolts is on a small flat area near the root of the handle. This has also been scrubbed.

No evidence under the bridge or ring of prior drilling and tapping.

I have a 1935 short rifle that has been scrubbed and is similar to the picture on page 73 in "Mauser Military Rifles of the World" 4th Edition by Robert W.D. Ball
The only information is the on the receiver is DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN. BERLIN
The serial number is barely visible.
