I have a No.4 Mk2. It is in mint cond. All ser. #'s match from butt plate to mag. How do I find out it's history? I know where n when it was made. I would like to find out if it was ever issued. I paid $275 at a gun store for it. Serial # is PF302xxx. Tnx for any info.
Welcome. Unfortunately you will never learn much about the history of any individual rifle. Armies keep records, but unless the record is required for some specific accounting or inventory control reason, there is little chance of you getting any paperwork.
My copy of Charles Stratton's British Enfield Rifles, Vol 2, shows serial number PF302xxx as a postwar rifle built at Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley towards the end of 1953. There will be a multitude of stamps and marks on the rifle that tell other parts of the story.
Sarge, I think at $275 you got a great rifle at a great price.
Sarge1: You did, indeed, get a real bargain. I bought one yesterday at the Calgary show for considerably more than what you payed! Mine is still dripping cosmoline and not a ding or scrape anywhere so had to have it. If you've perused old threads on this site you'll see that there is one school of thought that has many of these going to Ireland (Republic of). There is one older post from '09 that actually lists destination by serial number which indicates yours was sold or given to "Anglo Egyptian Sudan".
