L42 - Unit Manufactured Bipod?

Hello all!

Recently picked up this unit manufactured bipod which is originally from a Bren Mk2.

As you can see the bipod can be quickly removed from the mounting spigot via the R-clip.

The spigot requires a hole to be drilled into the stock.

My question chaps - is this something a unit armourer would have done and has anyone seen a bipod attached to an L42 at unit level before? :confused:

Looking at this and in all honesty, I seriously doubt whether this is anything but a hastily made up 'thing' by someone who's not well skilled in metalwork. And definately nothing sanctioned by any authority.

If it was my rifle, I'd glue and plug the hole up!

One thing that's a bit interesting is the locking pin hole seems to line up with the forend band. Presumably if this really was used on an L42, a hole was drilled through the band as well.

I think that I'd only keep it as an illustration of mans ability to misuse hand tools and his imagination.

This looks like a homemade copy of a commercial version of this bipod I remember was offered in North America back in the '90s. The webs around the hinge pins are the giveaway. As happens so often, shortly afterward the expensive model hit the stores, there was a Chinese copy out for a lot less money. Mine came in a plain cardboard box labelled, M85 or Gibbs, and unlike the Bren example, mine has a thumb latch that engages a notch on the spigot.

That long spigot is a puzzler. Mine has a short spigot that seats in a hard rubber handstop. A vertical bolt catches the spigot in a through hole, and everything snugs against T-nut in a foreend rail.

Would that be the "Parker-Hale" bipod first seen on the M-85? I have a couple of "clones" in the "bipod box" here in the crypt.

The original is a nifty little unit that clipped onto a spigot mounted in the front of the M-85 fore-end.

M-85s seem a bit scarce in Oz.
