M1 Garand Identification
Hi
I have just purchased a deactivated (I'm in the UK) M1 Garand.
Details;
H and R Arms Co. serial number 5700101.
Trigger assy marked c46025 W.R.A
Cartouche stamps on walnut stock are -
-ordnance wheel with crossed canons
-Circle with what looks like GIN1 in it?
There is no P in a circle?
The end of the barrel has 'x' stamped all across numbers so I cant read them?
When bolt pulled back, the following is visible on the barrel;
LMR D6535448 11 53 A25 P M (The 'P' is larger than the rest of the characters.)
The bolt has the following;
D28287-198A
A-9
Can any one give me more details about this Garand?
Thanks.

Hi There
I'm also a UK Resident and have a Deactivated Garand, is yours an 'Old Spec Deact' ?
I recently added photos and information on mine and the guys on here really helped me out and taught me a lot, so I'm sure your questions will be answered.
You may know this already but the serial number is dated 1955 and the barrel is 1953.

Hi.
Yes mine is an old deac. I was told when I purchased it that it dated from around 1953.
How can you tell from the serial number it is from 1955? Have been looking around for info on dates serial numbers were from but can't find anything?
Thanks.

Here's a couple sites that may help. M1 Garand Born on Date http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html There's also a search feature here that will enable you to go through all the past threads and glean information at your own speed.

He posted on another forum and I gave him those sites as well as M1 Garand Armory

Hard to say if the 11-53 LMR barrel is original to the rifle. The majority of the LMR barrels found to be original to late HRA rifles seem to be dated during 1955. Keep in mind that many LMR barrels were used during rebuild programs. Is there a punch mark either within the loop of the P or close to it ?? The P being the one on the barrel. Barrels installed by HRA will have the punch mark in this area. Barrels installed during rebuilds should also have a punch mark in this area but it was often overlooked. What I am trying to say is that the lack of a punch is a good indication the barrel was installed during a rebuild. If it has the punch you will have to look for other indicators of a possible rebuild.

The "XXXXed" out barrel stamping are import markings into the U.S. by Arlington Arms, Arlington, VA. Next to them are commercial British proof marks. Most M1 rifles imported into the US by Arlington came from Korea. The rifle may have obtained its replacement LMR barrel while in Korean service. In any case the barrel was on a rifle that was imported into the US from Korea, and was on a rifle proof fired in Britian, not to say it was the same rifle.
