I does look like an 03 or an A3 for the first guy.
I thought we looked at this one time and figured these were engineer or some such thing...thus the 1903 (A3)? in the order of battle.
I think the posts are ventilation stacks that were present on the first design of these ,venting the exhaust gasses from the tank deck , being removed after # 542. # 491 was the first to replace the aircraft type elevator between the top deck and the tank deck with a hindged ramp set up to allow quicker unloading.
