Just a guess, but is he doing some work on a M1 carbine receiver? Almost appears that he has shop manual open leaning against the box.

Notice the rail line maybe a heavy artillery piece is nearby.

I understood the Japanese had small gauge railways installed in their fortified islands.

Cleaning his weapon and not to worried about souvenier collecting for obvious reasons.
