Demilitarized 03
Just got it a auction tonight. No wood ,it is a solid plastic, but the forearm etc can be removed.
A 2 of 43 plugged barrel. Some kind of flat piece of metal inscribed with lines and welded to were the rear sight should be.
Bolt must have been welded shut. Remington swivels. Metal butt plate but no signs that it was used for a drill rifle
What caught my eye was a plate welded where the rifles description and serial number would have been. The plate says, " Rifle Dummy MK5-0 22169."
Anybody ever see such a rifle? Only spent $40.00 for it.

No but years ago I bought a Mint 03A3 Remington with a plastic stock for about 100.00 and a .22 rifle. The Plastic stock mystified me as I've never seen one . This 03A3 belonged to my friends friend who apparently threw it in a Safe and never fired it. I since replaced the stock but have the plastic one still . Does anybody know the nature of these stocks ? Are these a "Drill" or a "Sporter" stock ? The plastic stock used all the hardware from the wooden one and is in the same configuration as the Military one.

According to Brophy, these rifles are Mk 5 Mod 0 or 1 and they are for US Navy training...there's pics in this thread MK5 Dummy rifle.03 There's a whole section about them in Brophy's book on the 1903 under drill and dummy rifles.

They must have made them plastic due the exposure to salt water. Just a SWAG. Got to get Brophy's book. Amazon a good place? The second rifle which I did not buy was a Model 1. Live and learn!
Both had the flat, line inscribed, welded, rear sight. Thanks browningauto rifle....

Brophy says the parts that were damaged most were the stock...and I forget what the other was...anyway, it was due to handling and general use. They didn't have to use them just for drill. They were welded solid. That's why they were marked as such. Yes...you have to get Brophy's book...Amazon...
