Saw a rifle tonight that I swore was a 91/30 built by Remington. Had a Nagant action and stock. Auctioneer kept telling me that it was a .30 Remington. I said it was a 7.62 by 54.
Is the buyer going to have a big surprise went he tries to chamber a 30? Went for $160.00
Remington did indeed make M91 (not 91/30s) rifles on a contract for the Russian government. New Westinghouse made some as well. However, due to the Russian revolution, many of the rifles never made it to Russia, and were subsequently bought by the US Military to keep the firms from going under from all the lost money from the M91 contract. Some of them were converted to .30-06, but those go for A LOT more than $160. If the rifle was indeed an M91/30 as converted by the Russian government, then it is most definitely not chambered in .30-06
Without photos there's too many things it 'could' be. Had it been sporterised?
It could be a Remington M91 still in 7.62x54r
It could be a Remington M91 rechambered to .30-06 by Bannerman (and others) in the 1920s
It could be a Remington M91 converted to an M91/30 by the Soviets - incredibly rare. One is known, but whose to say there aren't others?
That figures! I should have tried slipping a .30 in there but auctioneers get upset when they know a gun is loaded..It was not sporterised.. It is gone now!
