11mm ammo, trying to identify

Local gun shop brought in a bunch of things from an estate. He called to say he had a bunch of 8x56R that I had been wanting. Going through the box there were several boxes that looked similar to the M1895 Steyr ammo boxes except bigger. Same odd shape. Most were unopened sealed in 1888. Found one open and inside was brass cartridges on stripper clip similar to the M1895. Bullets appear to be paper patched Lead. Rough measurement is 0.430" on the outside of the cardboard box it said 10.3 then 11mm and something in german I couldn't make out. Cases were head stamped 1886 but the box said 1888.
I was thinking 11mm Mauser but they were tube fed. Any thoughts on what rifle this ammo may go into?

I think they would be called 11mm Werndl or Mannlicher.

Jmoore, you are a lucky guy! They are 11x58R Werndl blackpowder cartridges in the clips for the M1886 Mannlicher. Military designation "Scharfe Patrone M1886". Made in Wiener Neustadt in 1888.

Apart from the 45-70 Remington-Lee*, possibly the only other production repeating rifle with such a large-bore "modern" vertical magazine (as opposed to a tubular magazine!. Thanks to the shock of the introduction of the (for those days) small-bore 8mm Lebel cartridge using smokeless powder, almost all were very quickly converted to the more familiar 8x50 cartridges, designation Scharfe Patrone M1888, and I am still looking for an unconverted rifle. I think most of those went to Chile, so I shall be waiting for a while yet!

yes that is them exactly. he has several boxes, unopened. BJA's gun and surplus in mt vernon ohio.

What is he charging? I have one I don't need, not really sure what a box is worth.

I think i gave about US$1 a round a few years back. Bought a fair number of them just in case a rifle ever shows up. Probably should have gotten the whole lot, but I still don't need 'em, so...
