I have most of the reference books on the 1903 and 1922 Series Springfields. I find myself turning to Brophy's book more than to anyone other one.
Brophy is probably the best all-around book on the M1903 - certainly the most complete. However, having been written nearly a generation ago, it is showing it's "age". I wish someone could give it a complete going over, but I doubt that will ever happen.
1) It is arranged in a manner very hard to use and confusing, especially to the new M1903 collector. He has, in effect, two separate systems of arranging his information. I do nt recommend this book to someone unfamiliar with M1903s - I think Canfield's 2003 ed. is a better choice, even with it's shortcomings.
2) Some of the data (although not as much as you'd think) is obsolete or incorrect.
3) The picture quality is poor to fair.
4) Relatively little attention is paid to RIA or Remington/SC rifles.
Understand, I still consider it (as I opened this post) as the "yardstick" by which all future efforts on the Springfield are mesured - but it does have a number of shortcomings, that you need to be aware.
Another point about the lack of info on the mainstream models is that I think there is way too much emphasis on very rare and specialized 1903s that would probably interest only a small handful of people.
While on Amazon, I was able to review parts of his book and I see what you say. I am always in need of general information and specific information about drill rifles and dummy rifles. I have several and I did not know others (Brophy) had information about them.
I guess a better way to put it would be to say that in relation to the amount of info on the most prevalant rifles there is far more on the obscure ones.
As long as you can review (and Search!) Col. Brophy's book online for free I would buy Campbell (2003) or Canfield(2004) first. Each book has its strong points but for general information like the ww2 contract rifles nad tables of serial numbers the newer books are better. For the real arcana Brophy takes the prize.
