Sling for match shooting No1 Mk III*

G' Day!

I recently purchased an Enfield 1916 Mk III* at a gun show. It is pretty nice, but was missing the rear sight protector (Have one on order). The recvr SN matches the barrel, the bolt body, the nose cap AND the forestock. Unknown if stock is original or if number was stamped at rebuild. There is an " E '35" stamping on the left side of the barrel at the breech. All other markings appear to be British proofs.

The rifle shoots very well and am able to get hits on a large steel target at 500M.

My question for you guys is what is the best sling to use with this rifle for target shooting? I have used the M1 sling....which is probably the best....and the Kerr sling, which ended up being too short. A long 1907 sling could probably work, too.

Is the British style sling usable for target shooting?

The M1907 and the Bren sling were used with no 4 T's. the Bren sling is the long version of the web rifle sling

The M1/M14 Cotton,( not Nylon) Web Sling will do you nicely!

But, the M1/M14 slings weren't issued or used with the SMLE. The M1907 and Bren sling were issued/used.

I believe these two are of members of the 131th Inf. the one soldier is accepting an MM from King George V. They were issued SMLE's while attached to the Australians.

I have no doubt about that, but the OP asked what the best Sling was for Match shooting that Rifle and I merely gave him my Opinion, having been there and done that.;)

Thanks for your input, fellows. I have used a nylon M1 sling that I have with me and it does work. If the M1907 was issued or available for the Mk III* ........or even obtained at the Western Front.....I may be inclined to use it, instead. Will have to get a long 1907 as the upper sling attachment on the Mk III* is an inch or so longer than on the Garand or the M1903 Springfield.

Have also heard of the Bisley sling. Would have to add a middle sling attachment, though.

If you want a sling for match shooting as opposed to something '....from the era' then just get the L42/L96 sniper sling that has been mentioned on the Parker Hale sniper rifle thread currently running. It really is the most versatile sling that's probably ever been invented AND it'll go on your rifle without any modifications to either the sling or the rifle. Single point, two point, loads of length and versatality built in by the bucketload. Without putting too fine a point on it, it was MADE and designed for your rifle............ Well, not YOUR rifle as such, but the No4 and L96 but the configuration is the same

Go over to Dow Arms Room in Dade City, (dowarms@eathlink.net), and get a Turner match sling if it's P'07 leather you want. They come in different lengths so guys whose knuckles drag on the ground can shoot matches! Bruce is a friend and mentor. He'll treat you right.

I can second that about Bruce having bought an AR from him some time back. However, I was given great advice in a thread here on how to use the standard issue webbing sling for the NO.1 Mk3 for extra stability and it has served me well.
