Well don't use maple for a start. Now that I think of it, don't use ANY oily wood............. Maple being the worst offender

I have to go see what I can get...."fancy" wood is hard to get these days by us plebs...I might be able to pick up a bit on Trademe.....(NZ's ebay)

If all you want to do is repair the draws on an Enfield, then why not go to a gunsmith (a real hands-on smith, not a dealer) and buy an old broken-off stock. Shotguns, for instance, are usually weak around the locks, and when they break it is often not worthwhile to repair them. A real gunsmith will probably have several broken stocks kicking around, and for the price of a beer (or two) you will get a chunk of really mature, stable walnut that will enable you to fit up a battalion of draws!
Might I suggest calling one or some local joiners and asking them nicely if you could get some small offcuts for your project. I can't think of any that I have worked for or know that would not help you for nothing in this. Chances are that you could pick their brains for tips and timber selection too. Most joinery people will have a genuine interest in what you are trying to do, and a couple of scaps from the pile nothing to them. The advise they might offer could be the most valuable thing you walk away with.Quote:
