Never Issued L1A1 Bore sight device.

Here are a couple of shots of my most recent gift. Its a Bore sight device that was never issued or used, it even has the stores labels attached. I doubt it was ever of any real use being based on a M2 tripod and a rifle stowage point from a vehicle, but as they say in England, 'Never look a gift horse in the mouth'.

The only part I know of being missing is the bore viewing mirror. Would anyone know if its a standard L1A1 accessory? Every other part appears to be an off the shelf or recycled part, even the cross hairs for the muzzle are fitted to a 7.62mm case which in turn clips to a recycled GPMG ammo belt link bolted to the frame.

Despite my best efforts and the originals being the correct way around, the photos are still upside down. Weird!

Wasn't this meant to be used without the the trigger mech housing ? Or at least with the trigger mech housing lowered and set-down through the recess in the Warminster table thinggy? It's a long time now but later, in order to eliminate the inevitable parallax caused by the stupid shell case and crosswires, the sub calibre barrel was used to close down the field of view and eliminate parallax. Developed by Capt Steve Sxxxxxx and a small team at Warminster

Anyone got the last EMER as the user handbooks weren't properly/fully updated towards the end of its life.

I have a funny feeling that it was developed to use in Northern Ireland where access to a 25m range was difficult. To be honest, the only real way to zero the SUIT sight shown and the IIW sight was to zero it in properly! That means putting bullets down the range.

We had the remains of the original trials variation of this hideous monstrosity at work. An alien from outer space wouldn't believe what he was seeing........ Mind you, nor would anyone with an GCSE* in needlework

* for you foreigners out there......... GCSE is the very basic school leavers standard of education. It really tells a prospective employer that you started school when you woz young and left when you woz a bit older!

I have one of these in my own collection. There IS a N.A.T.O Stock number engraved on the assembly. Seems like a good idea on Paper......BUT, as Peter quite rightly points out. You can ONLY Zero a rifle correctly, by shooting some rounds through it! Each & EVERY weapon has it's own individual characteristics & will 'Print' differently on the target. A LOT has to do with a combination of things. Which I won't go into detail about here. It is too involved, in depth & would be lengthyyyyyyy............ZZZZZzzzzzzzz......... Pete! There were TWO of these in the Armourers Shop at the School of Infantry when I was there. The Museum (Collection) may well have been given one? Or more probably chucked in the skip!...In the three years I was there. they NEVER moved off the shelf!........

There was also a silver/aluminium screen with black lines and bars and all sorts of things on it that you collimated onto that formed part of the kit. The problem with that was if it was a bright day, the light just obliterated all of the markings and in any case, the markings were ususlly scratched and scraped off as it was laid in the cupboard. To be honest, the little optical gadget that (I think 'aimpoint' ....) tried to sell us was a far better option. Cost twice as much but lasted twice as long and you only needed half of them!

Of course the armourers here are correct, there's bore sighting, grouping and zeroing, in that order. The most important is actual firing for confirmation.

I would love to get my grubby hands on one of these units.

Luckily, and more important, wisely, NZ, Australia and Canada didn't adopt this boresighting lesson in stupidity! But, needs must!

Every training regiment, Regimental depot, units in Northern Ireland and unit training wing had one of these things. The stupidity was boresighting the SUIT sight. The mounting system was dire and as I have said before, Armourers used to say that SUIT stood for Shooter Usually (or undoubtedly....) In Trouble. SUSAT a FAR better sight and in my opinion better than the later trijicon - but alas, from a previous generation

nzl1a1collector, I,ve still got the one I promised to you some time back and uncovered it the other day (just a bit more dust on top) all the bits there except the tripod, only way to post it is place some printed papers in with it and mark the parcel "Printed papers" (only way you can send anything overseas over 2 kilos)

Big Duke and others........ I had some MG R-V8 wings, bonnet and big stupid bumper thinggies in my garage wanting to get to Tasmania. So I went to a freight forwarders locally and asked if they could put me in touch with the sender of the next container or like shipment to Tassie. They did, about 6 weeks later and for a nominal price, he allowed me to sent them with their hospital machinery. Being used/2nd hand and fully declared properly as extra freight added to manifest was simple. Owner just collected from recipient on arrival 8 weeks later!

Should be easy with one of those whatsits!
