Hi All
I have a M96 all matching and I have a M38 barrel in the white. I would like to buy an action but don't know the correct Mauser action to buy or should I just put the barrel on the M96 and save the M96 barrel to put back on if I sell it. The M96 barrel is dark but the rifling is strong.

Give the M96 a fair trial as it is. Shoot, clean, shoot, clean... If it shoots OK, leave it alone.
Ok its dirty or it rusty. The patch comes out clean. Must be rust without showing any pitting. I still have the short barrel I bought at the same time as the 96. I still would like to know which of the Mauser actions and were to buy one to have short barreled 6.5 X 55.

They will fit m96, m38 and m94 actions at least. I have fitted a few of these barrels lately and they tend to need quite a bit of fitting. I have had to chase the threads substantially with all of them. Besides that they seem great.
I would not modify a servicable m96 for this barrel, as you will need to cut the wood down too. You could not reverse this, and put it back together as a long rifle. If it was mine and the barrel was stuffed, i'd permanently convert is to a carbine or get a lothar walther m96 prefit.
