Polish Mosin M44 chamber issue.

I have a 52 polish m44 in great shape. I think I understand these guns in general, but ran into something I could use some help on.

When I inspect used brass I noticed most of them have a mark on the shoulder area of the fired case. It seems to be a dent or groove. I don't know if this is poor chamber reaming or what. A few years ago I seem to remember a thread about this being a soviet feature, to identify military weapons from others, and prevent civilian reloading.

I'd love to fix this so my brass can be reloaded. Any tboughts?

I have a Yugo M48 that leaves a similar mark. I assumed a poor reaming job and all I do after reloading is rotate the case "mine's on top" so it doesn't line up a second time or third time then I anneal after 3rd firing. Been ok so far, but that's me, any pictures??

I shoot surplus in all my Mosin Nagants so I don't know if they would leave a mark on brass or not.

This is what mine look like, same cases just rotated a bit.
These where just fired an are not yet resized. When they are fired it kinda presses the previous bulges out. Hope that. Makes sense.

A bulge is different than a dent. A dent might be a piece of debris or rust in there. A bulge is the result of something missing.

Yes, but if after cleaning and it's still there the idea is the same. A picture would be nice.

thanks for the tips so far.

I don't have pictures. can't get any until next weekend, as I won't be able to get to the range to 'make' some cases like this until then.

The mark I am thinking of is a line that is on the shoulder, not the neck, and it is in line with the round.

Visualize the round sitting on the primer, straight up.

Now visualize yourself drawing a 'sharpie' marker on the shoulder of the case straight down, in one spot only.

That is what I am remembering.

NOW, it has been a few months since I had her out. I COULD be misremembering, and it COULD be on the neck area [where the bulge in the photos appears to me: thanks for the images].

And I COULD, very EASILY, be misusing the terminology.

I am referring to the straight area the round sits in as the neck, the angled part that moves out to the case walls at the bottom as the shoulder, and the case straights [well, relatively. Different issue. I KNOW the sides have a slight taper. But not the DRASTIC taper.] as the side-walls of the case.

The case 'shoulder', if I am using the term properly, is what changes the size from the bullet width to the full cartridge case width.

So, again, I could easily be using the wrong terms. And I could easily be mis-remembering. However, I am 85% sure the vertical [in-line] marks I was seeing were in the area I am describing as the shoulder: not the neck.

And I noticed it more severely on the steel-cased shells afterward than the brass. It made me wonder if I saw it more because the steel didn't expand/contract the same as brass.

Should I just have someone hone it? Is that even possible, without making the chamber too large?

Aragorn may have it, check for rust or debris first, a small dental mirror and a flashlight works. Also get your hands on the plastic dental scrapers they sell for gun cleaning an try scrap whatever it is out. If that don't work I suppose you can take it to a smith but then again is the labour cost worth it? That's up to you.
