Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1/2 Safety Quiery

Hi chaps,

I have a deactivated Lee Enflied No.4 Mk1/2 (F) FTR 52, made in 1944. I've had it for about 1 year and 7 months. I haven't fiddled with the safety for a while, so I may just be forgetting something. However, I thought I'd have a quick mess around with the No.4 when I noticed that I could fire off the action with the safety applied, which doesn't seem right. However, I cannot open the bolt (cocked, or not) and I cannot pull the cocking piece to half-cock with the safety on, which seems right. I have never done any work to the safety, so it seems odd for it to just change without any tampering. It appears to function when looking at it without the bolt in.

Any help, tips or knowledge would be appreciated.

Unscrew the screw, lever locking and the spring followed by the lever and safety catch. Now try loading and firing. If it all works then, it indicates that the problem lies somewhere within the locking lever and safety catch. It's called fault diagnosis where you eliminate one problem, then the next and so on until you find it

I have removed the parts and the action still works without the parts.

You've totally lost me............ Tell me/us EXACTLY what works and what doesn'#t work when you remove the locking bolt/lever assembly

Hi Peter,
I've found the problem. On the safety catch lever the part of metal that sticks out underneath the bolt, looks like a cylinder cut in half, had sheared off somehow. I have ordered a replacement, which should hopefully solve the problem.

savage enfield problems can any one help ??
i have a savage enfield ( pics too be posted later ) the rifle was butchered and in sad shape before i got it and after a bit of work seems too be coming together BUT here are the two main problems.

1 the trigger seems to be locked back against the Trigger guard/ mag frame
even with the trigger guard off the rifle its still locked back.

2 the safety seems to be keeping the bolt from being pulled back /cycling
the only way too pull the bolt back is take the safety off completely.

this problem may be the same as the post above

the whole rifle was parkerized (And yes i know its not orig)but i wanted a finish that i didn't have too worry about if it got scratched or fell off a table stand etc.


and i wonder if maybe some one didn't put a pin in wrong or the finish is causing some of the problems.

i would hate too think that a well known gun shop with its own TV show could be so incompetent on such a simple gun project.

Can any one help me ??

For the trigger and sear, strip it down and start again. For the safety thing, the two parts of the safety catch system (the locking lever and the actual catch) have been axially assembled wrongly. But I could be wrong
