My 2 No4s

Hello all. Here's my 2 Savage No4s. They are both No4Mk1*. One is from 1942 with matching bolt. It also has South African proof marks on it. The other I believe is 1944, and the bolt does not match. It does not have a date on it, but I believe this is the right date from the serial numbers. Just a few pics for now. I just have a couple questions about them.

Attachment 46742 The Savage marked '42 has the adjustable sights on it. I believe it has a "F" for Fazakerley. Is that unusual? I've had 4 Savages and they all had peep sights. I know that some Savage parts were used overseas so I assume it is normal to have it go the other way.

Attachment 46743 The buttstock on the '42 seems to be larger than the buttplate.

Attachment 46744 You can also see that the stock is carved slightly differently around the receiver on each rifle.

Just some observations. I'll get some more pics of them and my other Enfields all together sometime soon.

The early Savages had a stock that was cutout for a magazine cut off. A cut off was never used in production so later stocks did not have this.

The butt should always extend beyond the edge of the butt plate. In fact, the woodwork should always extend beyond the metalwork. You can always tell a bubba refurb job because the bubba merchants always sand away the wood.

@Peter that is very interesting. I'm curious, so, all the rifles I see with wood flush with the but plates have been altered?

They probably wouldn't leave OUR workshops with butt and butt plate flush! The ideal would look like the butt on the right

Got a chance to shoot my "new" No4 Savage. Put about 80 rounds through it. I was sighting in a PU that I spent most of the day on. Seemed to hit center when I was aiming at the right edge of the paper. When I bought the rifle it had adjustable sights on it, but I had some Savage peep sights so I put them on. Maybe that was the reason. Couldn't be sure though as it was a windy day. Anyway, here are some photos and a vid of me shooting it. I will try to take better pics soon.
