5 digit Inland
I went to a local gun show this morning and found only three M1 carbines. I was deciding between a Saginaw and Inland and didn't really want the Saginaw because the muzzle swallowed a M2 round down to the casing. Well, I was about to put down the Inland as well when the seller asked me if I saw the serial number. I hadn't at that point but when I looked I saw a early 5 digit number. Never had my hands on a 5 digit before so it followed me home. It has been through rebuild with a Underwood 1944 barrel but I couldn't turn away on this one. Would this serial number place it early 1942? ...Serial 3382x
Will be taking some pics later but right now I can only find a faint edge of what may be the rebuild stamp box and nothing in the sling well. The hand guard is marked Pedersen U with ordnance bomb.

Carbine Club Newsletter #268 February 1, 1999 has a list of Inland serial numbers by barrel dates from data sheets. The way I read it your receiver would have had a barrel dated ranging from 8-42 to 10-42.

Thanks, from what I can find out that is the period for this receiver. I was sort of toying with the idea to restore it. I probably won't mess with doing that but it is a tempting idea. Wonder how hard it would be to find a correct dated Inland barrel?
