Could this be a Type 30 stock?

My son-in-law's grandfather left him a part of what appears to be an Arisaka rifle.
The stock, cleaning rod and trigger guard/magazine are there.

I bought a Type 38 thinking to install the barrel/receiver and bolt in the above rifle stock. But it does not fit as the following photos show.

The mystery stock is not sufficiently inletted to accept the Type 38 receiver/barrel assembly.

If anyone can verify that the rifle stock is from a Type 30 I would appreciate it.

I bought Frank Allen's book on Early Arisakas and it has one photo of the Type 30. It looks like this rifle stock. However, the image is not high definition so I can't be sure.

I think you might have a Type I stock. These take a carcano action but look very similar to a Type 38.

I pulled out my Type I and everything looks the same with the exception of the small groove on the right side where the safety button goes on the bolt when closed. On yours it is rounded, on mine it is more sharply cut in the front.

I can't tell from your photos but does it have the split butt stock? Type I's have that just like the Type 99's.

You shouldn't have too much trouble getting a barreled action. They aren't as common as a Type 38 but they are around and inexpensive. They make for a very heavy rifle.

Good eye sir! Checked the reference photos of Type I rifle on Liberty Tree Collectors web-site.

The trigger guard has the same squared off shape as my mystery stock's.

Finding a Type I action/barrel is going to be a challenge.

Thanks for the link to your thread. Your Type I looks terrific! Very interesting to follow the history of these milsurps. Now I can tell my son-in-law that its a stock from a Naval rifle, made in Italy to Japanese specs.

Yes, this rifle butt stock is made of two pieces, I'm guessing with the sliding dovetail.

Besides, searching the online gun listings, where would you look for a Type I action/barrel and bolt?
