Were these ever used as trench guns during WWI? I know that the 520-30's were eventually used during WWII, but I haven't read much of anything in the way of the double hump 520's.

Everything I've read suggests they were lined up to serve in WWI-a contract was made, but the war ended before the shotguns were delivered.
I also recall reading somewhere that the double humps served in a rear/home guard capacity in the states during WWII, and that some likely made it to WWII gun crew training (skeet/trap games).
The 620 is listed in the 1942 TM9-285 field manual for all shotguns, but the 520 is listed there as well.
I don't believe the double hump was ever a service shotgun. While everyone refers to the Stevens guns as the 520 and 620, the 520 that was in service (single hump) was the 520-30 as you know. I can't swear that the original 520 never had a role in the military, but from my research, not as a combat weapon.
