Gentlemen,
There's a young fellow here in Australia that's convinced that the Bayonet L1A3 was used mainly by British Special Forces. In fact he states: "thats a l1a2 different to the l1a3 the l1a3 is the improved version of both l1a1 and the l1a2 the a3 was mainly used by the british special forces"
Can someone (Peter Laidler???) shine some light on this one please?

Since the UK special forces used M16 and other weapons rather than the SLR at least in the 60's, in the most case i would suspect that this is another of those wonderful stories that plague our hobby. But Peter is th eman to confirm this, and hopefully agree with me.
Hey Trundle..........., come a bit closer as I don't want everyone to hear this..... but you'd be doing the whole of the bayonet collecting world a favour by telling him that he's talking a whole load of bollocks....... That is a particularly Army/RAEME technical phrase that I learned in Australia to emphasise the fact that someone is talking a load of......., well......., er....., bollocks!
The correct story/reason for the L1 A1,2,3,4 variants has been well documented on this site. If he still doesn't believe you after you've gently but politely told him of his minor error, ask him to phone me. But my reply will be slightly more robust than this and will include some well known Australian phrases or sayings

Pete, if that really were the case. the with the HUGE/VAST/MASSIVE amount of the L1 series that was released from the M.O.D. Then we must have had a VERY large Special Forces!.....................Is this guy on Day release?........
another one of the "..never ceases to amaze me ..." things about our collecting , like the "unfired" rifle , i think intended to get more cash from the buyer

Learning gets in the way of a great story. It still embarrasses me when a theoretical identification i made years ago on my site and then got cleared up seems to have become well known and used as an identification of faked 1907 quillioned blades, despite putting up the correct ID
that tis a shame , there is an old joke regarding all the good one might offer in life but one dalliance being his remembrance , however old-smithy , you will always be one of my recommended sources to anyone in need of good info , and i know nothing of bad hookie info ......................
Ah.......................the illusive L1A3 Bayonet, that must have been at the Embassy Siege along with the other 500 wannabees, I've met.
